List of Services for Long Covid in Ireland

Note, this is a work in progress and will be added to as we receive more information/recommendations.

Always do your own research before you choose your clinician, the below information is based on patient experience and is NOT to be taken as medical advice.

PUBLIC SERVICES FOR LONG COVID

The national HSE’s framework for the care of Long Covid patients, takes the form of six public LC clinics around the country.

Dublin

-Beaumont Hospital – overseen by Dr. Eoghan De Barra

-St. James’ Hospital -overseen by Dr Ciaran Bannan (alongside Dr Aoife Laffan, Neurologist assigned to Long Covid by the HSE)

-St. Vincent’s Hospital -overseen by Dr. Stefano Savinelli

Note: there was up until Dec 2022, a public LC clinic in the Mater Dublin under Dr Jack Lambert, but the HSE took the decision not to fund this clinic and therefore had to close.

Remainder of the country is serviced by three LC clinics;

-Cork University Hospital – overseen by Dr Katie McFaul, patients also seen by Dr Arthur Jackson

-University Hospital Limerick – as of March 2025 not currently operational due to lack of staff, if you are in this region, consider asking to be referred to any alternative clinic

-University Hospital Galway – Overseen by Infectious Disease consultant Dr David Gallagher with input where appropriate from Dr Mike Harrison Respiratory Consultant. Referrals should be made to Dr Gallagher’s office.

There are also post covid clinics, where the primary focus is on patients who were hospitalized during acute Covid. Some of these clinics are taking a Long Covid role whilst the others become fully operational. Tallaght Hospital was operating one such clinic, but as of July 2024 this may have now closed.

PRIVATE SERVICES FOR LONG COVID

The following is a list of services/consultants with whom a number of Long Covid patients report having had positive experiences. However, it is also important to note that different patients may have different experiences of the same doctor.

If you are ever unhappy with an appointment, it is within your right to discuss that with the doctor. It is also within your right as a patient to dispute a diagnosis you are given if you feel it is not accurate/appropriate.

General Consultants (providing management of Long Covid as a condition)

A consultant who can treat LC as a whole should help you to pull together feedback/test results from other specialists to understand how the symptoms may be interacting with each other. They will usually attempt to manage the majority of LC symptoms but will refer onwards to a specific speciality if needed.

Patients can self refer to this email address with the following information;

  3. What are your current symptoms?
  4. Who have you seen in relation to the illness, Consultant/Specialist?
  5. Are you on any medication?

-Dr Uddin Rizwan (General consultant with specialist interest area in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and other fatigue related conditions – Main office is the Hermitage Clinic, also holds clinics in Beacon Hospital and Blackrock Clinic. GP referral is needed.

-Beacon Hospital Dublin Long Covid Clinic

The clinic is led by Seamus Linnane (general internal medicine and respiratory). However there are multiple consultants seeing patients. Patients report particularly positive experiences with Dr Linnane specifically.

The clinic request you contact by email where ever possible due to business of their phone line

covid.recovery@beaconhospital.ie (ph 01 650 4860). GP referral is needed.

Unfortunately we currently have received no names for general consultants for LC recommended by LC patients, anywhere outside of Dublin

Note: It is quite common that when seeing a consultant of a specific speciality, they may only be able to treat your symptoms in that particular area, and may have less/no knowledge of Long Covid as a multi-system disease

Yoga

We are aware of the following providers as having experience of Long Covid, in particular PEM (post exertional malaise). However we still recommend that any patient participating in ANY form of exercise should 1) carry out their own research on the form of exercise/class/provider and its appropriateness for their own medical circumstances 2) be aware of their own personal energy limitations at all times, and 3) not rely on any service provider (no matter their experience of Long Covid or similar conditions) to ensure that they (the patient) stay within their energy envelope as only they can make that assessment.

Suzy Bolt – specifically Suzy’s Rest Repair Recover programme (online) has been recommended to us by several members of the Long Covid community.

Services for children

Unfortunately none of the public LC clinics accept referral for anyone under the age of 16 years. The government believes that prevalence rates in children are low and that children should be adequately cared for by their GP and if necessary, a general paediatric consultant.

However Long Covid Kids charity has received feedback from many parents that they have not had good experiences with this model of care. The main complaints are that the doctors they see do not have knowledge of Long Covid, the latest data on LC, do not often feel confident diagnosing it and are not adequately managing the child’s symptoms.

There are therefore currently no official public dedicated services for children with Long Covid in Ireland.

Dr Orla Walsh operates a clinic in Connolly Hospital Dublin and see patients with post acute viral illnesses. Her clinic is not specifically aimed at Long Covid, however she sees children and adolescents suffering from fatigue based post acute viral issues.

Private Services for children

Cardiology

Gastroenterology

There are only approximately three consultants in paediatric gastroenterology in Ireland, the waiting times are therefore long even when going private. This is a list of the consultants, we have no information as to whether they have knowledge of LC.

Prof Billy Bourke Blackrock Clinic

Dr Shoane Quinn Crumlin

Prof Seamus Hussey

Note on coeliac disease

Considering quite a number of children have had coeliac disease triggered by a Covid infection, children with Long Covid would likely benefit from a coeliac screening test, via blood test. If the blood test should come back as positive, it will trigger an automatic referral by your GP (but do follow up to ensure it has been arranged) for a gastroenterologist and likely to be added to the wait list for a OGD scope. In almost all cases an OGD scope is carried out to confirm a coeliac diagnosis. Unfortunately there is a  12 month to 18 month approx wait time for scopes for children, there is no private scope waiting list, the list for public and private patients is the same. You may be offered a cancellation sooner.

ENT

Dr Paul Burns, Beacon

Dr Amy Herlihy (also a general functional medicine doctor) Cork

Dr Goodwin McDonnell  Dublin– semi retired

EDS (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome)

There may be a greater incidence of post infectious illnesses such as Long Covid and ME/CFS in those with EDS. EDS may be associated with an increased risk in developing such conditions.

Dr Anand Saggar of the Beacon Hospital Dublin, has experience in the diagnosis and management of EDS.

NOTE ON EXERCISE

When discussing services, it is always important to reiterate that a doctor/medical professional who is well informed on Long Covid will not suggest exercise for a patient for whom PEM/PESE (Post exertional symptom exacerbation) is a symptom. Exercise IS NOT a treatment for Long Covid and may be harmful and cause deterioration. This is as per NICE communication on LC dated 2020.

Additional/Complementary/Alternative therapies

Always research. Some alternative therapies such as acupuncture are well researched and considered safe, others are much newer and may come with risks, always do your research.

Physiotherapy

Ensure to use a physio registered with iscp.ie

Also see ISCP Long Covid Hub at the following link https://askthephysio.ie/post-covid-19-hub/

Ensure the physio you or your child work with is aware of the risks of bringing on PEM/PESE and advises accordingly

Note: Endometriosis and other gynaecological issues are more common in women with ME, a similar pattern may emerge with women with LC. Pelvic Physio Aoibhin McGreal, of Clane Hospital Kildare and Beacon Hospital Dublin specialises in pain in pelvic region

Acupuncture

Acupuncture/Physiotherapy: Rathfarnham Physiotherapy/Acupuncture clinic 01 4904022.

Robin assesses patients and with patient’s input she puts in place a personalised LC strengthening programme. (Note never engage in any movements that trigger PEM, if small movements/exercises to avoid muscle weakness are tolerated that is fine, but if they trigger a worsening of symptoms (PEM) they should be avoided). Work with your clinician to find this point.

The clinic also provides acupuncture which some LC patients report a benefit from.

Deirdre Souchere –  (specialist interest area in women’s health issues, but treats all issues) – Innerlightacupuncture.ie

Important: always check the clinic’s practices re. Hygiene practises etc, and other details of the service they offer, there is no standardisation yet, so it is best to do your research. Not all devices used are to the same standard. Clinics vary in relation to safety procedures and medical staff in attendance for emergencies.
