Long Covid and Psychology

Long Covid is NOT a psychological condition. The WHO are clear on this matter.

There is now an enormous wealth of research showing physiological abnormalities in patients with LC.

The reason why many Irish clinicians believe Long Covid is psychological/psychosomatic is likely due to two main factors;

  • Decades long misconceptions about post acute viral illnesses (such as ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia, chronic Lymes being due to psychological factors etc)
  • The lack of an agreed upon diagnostic biomarker for LC (standard tests eg. blood tests usually come back normal in the majority of LC patients)

If your clinician believes LC is a psychological condition, it may be advisable to change clinician.

Although Long Covid is not a psychological illness, patients with any debilitating chronic illness can benefit from support for their mental health.
